Gutting the Interior
So in order to make room for the roll cage, seat, and other equipment, as well as to lose weight, the interior must come out of the car. This is a fun, if laborious, process.
First, the seats, seat belts and related trim pieces come out.
Most of the interior was pretty straighforward. That is, until we got to the dash. There were many more screws that expected, some maddeningly threaded from behind. Getting the dash out took the most time (a few hours), interrupted briefly by a homemade Chicago-style, deep dish pizza for lunch (YUM!!!).
Another view, after several more screws, wondering how the heck this dash comes out!
We found lots of wiring to be disconnected under the dash. I'm sure figuring out how it all goes back together will be LOTS of fun. :-(
Wiring, wiring, everywhere!
Ta-da! No more dashboard!
Back side of the dash, with the knee bar and HVAC ducting exposed.
The carpeting is now all out!! Wondering where the roll cage will fit into all of this...
Reassembling the steering column so we can remount the steering wheel to (eventually) drive the car to the shop for a roll cage. The airbag was removed and we'll eventually put on a racing-style steering wheel. We also had to track down miscellaneous airbag sensors, which consist of weights (the lighter we can make the car the better).
